This is a large burl on a tree.
Large burl ready to be cut into sections.
After a large piece of the burl is cut with a chain saw it is then screwed to a face plate and then attaced to the lathe.
This 22 inch diameter piece of burl is ready to spin.
Once on the lathe the burl will be carved while it is spinning. See the video below (part 12) to watch the process.
Initially the piece is rounded and a tenon is made on the bottom in order to accept a chuck.
This photo shows the chuck gripping the tenon.
The chuck is then mounted on the lathe so the turning process can continue.
Any piece that is large enough can be cored in order to make smaller bowls. This photo is blurry because I was holding the camera while coring. The slight wobble was shaking my hand.
This is the roughed bowl. It has been cut thick and will take several months to dry. Until then the rough cut bowl will be waxed and stored.
This is a photo of the smaller cored piece. It will go through the same proces as the larger bowl from which it was cut.
